I can’t believe I am not in Italy anymore! I will never forget the memories I made. The trip changed me in many ways. I learned that there is life outside of the United States. It was so cool to be able to see what Italy is like because Italy is a country that people talk about in the United States. There are many Italian restaurants, baked goods, and cultural aspects of Italy in the USA. I learned that real Italian food is very different from the food at Chefs and Mulberry’s. Chicken parmesan is not an actual thing in Italy. It is true that they drink wine with every meal! In Italy, people have a glass of wine with every meal but they do not drink heavy amounts of alcohol at dinner. I never drank the wine at dinner because it was not sweet. The wine was strong. During the trip, we made friends that we will never forget. The people who I studied abroad with will always have a special place in my heart. Italy was an experience of a lifetime!

Torremaggiore is a very small and friendly place. The people will do anything to make us happy. Whatever we want, we got it! People on the streets wave to us and say, “Are you the people from Buffalo?” It is like being a celebrity. The trip has been good so far. I know that I will look back at it and remember all of the people from the town. There are a few towns people that everyone from the group knows. For example, we know a shopkeeper and his mother because we went into their stationary store once and they say hello to us every time we pass by their store. Torremaggiore looks like a city but it is a small town. The people live in apartments rather than houses. People do not have backyards with their apartments. In Torremaggiore, there are a few stray dogs. We like to go up to them and pet them. Dogs are allowed to be friendly. Throughout the trip, we have been teaching in the schools in Torremaggiore. The teachers give us lots of time to teach and create lessons. Alex and I completed lessons on the weather in Buffalo, heads, shoulders, knees, and toes, and where Italy is in relation to Buffalo. We loved every minute of teaching. The best part of Torremaggiore was the Senior Grazi’s meals. Every night we had 4 course meals. It was the best experience of my life. Food is something that brings everyone together. The best memories in life are made with food! I will never forget the amount of food I had in Italy.
We just finished our last day in Rome! Our 3 days in Rome were jam packed with adventure. We were able to see the Vatican, the Pope, the Altar of the Fatherland, the first hospital of Rome, the Colosseum and eat lots of yummy-licious food! The best meal I had was bucatini. Bucatini is hallow noodles with spaghetti sauce and bacon. Bacon and pasta sauce is the most amazing combination. Rome was very big and full of Catholic history. I grew up as Catholic so it was amazing to see all of the history of Catholicism. We saw the Trevi Fountain and it is much bigger than it looks in photos! It is huge! When we arrived at the fountain, I made a wish with a dollar euro coin. It was a lot of money but I really wanted my wish to come true. Making a wish at the Trevi Fountain is the ultimate wish. The best place we went to eat was a local restaurant. The restaurants that have a completely Italian menu are the best. The restaurants that have English words on the menu are tourist traps. My favorite part of Rome was seeing the Pope. Never in my life did I think I would ever see the Pope because he is such a big deal. The Pope speaks from his balcony and thousands of people watch. He spoke in Italian so we did not know what he was saying. He spoke for about 10 minutes and then we went on to see the parade. After the Pope was finished speaking, he blessed the crowd. So I guess you could say I was blessed by the Pope ;). Italy has so much pizza and gelato. While I was in Rome, I had pizza from three different places. My favorite pizza was a cheese pizza with ham on it. I ordered a pizza with olives on it and didn’t realize that it had anchovies on it until Dr. Renzoni told me. I didn’t eat it after that! It was interesting to walk the streets of Rome at night and take in the city. As we walked down the street, we saw a man playing the violin. It reminded me of Paris because of the classical music being played on the street. It feels like things are cheaper here than in the USA. Today, I bought a slice of pizza for $1.50.
A very special night we had was drinking wine on a rooftop bar. We drank wine as the sun set. The Colosseum was lit up for the night and we saw all of the ancient buildings of Rome. The streets have lights so it feels very romantic. Currently, I am in Torremaggiore teaching English. We are off to our next adventure. Talk to you soon! Hey everybody! Welcome back! Today, I begin my second IPDS trip with Buffalo State. This time, we are traveling to Italy! I absolutely love Chef’s so I really think I’m going to like the food here in Italy. I’ve heard from my aunt who has traveled to Italy that real Italian food is nothing like Chef’s. I am eager to see what authentic Italian food taste like rather than the very Americanized Italian food we have here in Buffalo. The hardest part of studying abroad for me is missing not only my friends, family, and boyfriend, but I also miss the United States. I am excited to see what another country is like though. It will be neat to be in another country that speaks a different language. When I was in Chile, I knew a bit of Spanish so I was able to pick up on what the people were saying. In Italy, I will have no clue what they are saying! That is a part of the fun. I am sitting in the Philadelphia airport waiting for our flight to Italy and there are so many priests and nuns in the waiting area for the flight to Rome. It is so interesting! It is obvious where they are going. The Vatican. I am looking forward to landing in Rome. I can official mark Europe off the bucket list. Soon, I will see what life is like in Italy, I wonder if it will remind me of Chile or the USA. So far, it is reminding me of the Chile because it is a big metropolitan city. From this trip, I am expecting to become more culturally aware of what the world outside of the United States is like. When I traveled to Chile, my appreciation for traveling grew and I knew Italy will do the same. Ciao! Our last day in Chile! We felt like the gang from Friends!
