Today I co-taught a lesson with another teacher candidate in a fifth grade classroom. Before coming to Italy each teacher candidate was to make an ESL book about the American culture. The text was written in English and then translated in Italian. My book was about life in New York City and my partners book was about baseball. We decided for this lesson we would station teach where we would both do a read aloud and go over the vocabulary from our books. After the small groups instruction we regrouped back to a whole group setting where we played a vocabulary game.
We were presented with an opportunity to visit a local high school. High school in Italy is slightly different than the high school system in New York. In Italy students receive a high school education for five years. The fifth year of high school is where the students can enter into their major for college. So the fifth year of Italian high school would be freshmen year of college. Also, the school days are operated differently where school is for six days of the week. Students come to school around 8:30am and leave at 2:30. But on certain days the upper grades get to leave half a day at 12:30.
