Sadly our trip has come to an end and it's back to reality. I can't even begin to express how grateful I am to have gotten this opportunity. This trip has made such a big impact on my life and has made me grow not only as a teacher but as a person. I learned things from the schools in Torremaggiore that I will later implement into my own classrooms.

The last few days of our trip we spent traveling along the Amalfi Coast. I didn't think our trip could get any better but the last few days were some of the best. Again we traveled in the large van, this time the driving was a lot less bumpy. Our first stop was in Pompeii. We learned about the once thriving city and it's history prior to the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. It was really interesting to walk through the city and imagine what it once looked like. After our tour we had lunch and then made our way to our hotel in Sorrento. The next day we left our hotel and made a day trip to the isle of Capri. This had to be one of the most exciting days on the trip for me. Capri had always been on my bucket list and I was so excited to finally being able to say I've been. Capri has by far the most breathtaking views. I loved all the winding street and the beautiful coast line. I couldn't even imagine what it would look like in the summer! (I definitely will go back to see!) To get back to our hotel from Capri you must take a ferry. On our way home we all decided that it would be a great idea to sit outside of the ferry on our twenty minute boat ride. It probably wasn't the smartest decision since it was the middle of winter, but it was so much fun and something none of us will forget. The next day was sadly our last day. We traveled to Naples and toured the old city and had a delicious lunch. After lunch we did a bit of shopping and then it was back to Rome. Sadly this was our last night, so a few of us all decided to get on last dinner together. We did more than just teach in Torremaggiore. The town was so welcoming of us that they even took us on excursions in their town. We visited different schools to see what they were working on. The students even put a concert on for us! Other days we learned the history of the town while visiting a cemetery and multiple churches. Other days we got to visit a winery, olive oil mill and even a buffalo farm to learn about buffalo Mozzarella (so good!!) We got to meet the buffalos! On our last night we visited a castle that we could see from our B&B, here we learned the history and then even attended a concert and had dinner. We left for Torremaggiore on Tuesday afternoon and minutes into our bus ride our bus hit another bus, which caused our mirror to fall off. This was a start to a very interesting bus ride. It was a very bumpy and long ride to get to Torremaggiore but finally we arrived. The following day we woke up early to go visit the school. Little did we know all the students and teachers were ready to greet us all outside. It was such a beautiful moment that I will never forget. They performed songs for us and were so excited to show us around their school. After visiting the school and meeting our teachers we then set out to explore Torremaggiore. I ended up working with a bunch of different grades! Mainly fourth, but also worked with kindergarten, fifth grade, and also pre-school students. I learned a lot from this experience that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. I became more confident in my teaching abilities. I also learned how to implement music into the classroom. These are skills that I would have only learned while being on this trip. As soon as we got to Rome we were ready to explore. Our first two days we spent walking around the winding streets and eating lots of delicious food. We visited the Colosseum multiple times, we even brought a Buffalo Bills flag to take pictures with as a group. After the Colosseum we went to visit the Vatican and then broke off from the group to go get food. We ended up getting Pizza and then walking around the city. We came upon the Pantheon and also the Trevi Fountain. One night we even visited an ice bar, still not as cold as Buffalo! More to come soon!! I really wanted to take a cooking class while in Rome to learn how to make homemade pasta. Luckily the first night we were able to book a pasta making class for the following day. So four of us started to make our way into the city, only to end up getting lost. We ended up making it there just in time for the class. Once we got there we met our chef who’s name was Francesco. We started with only flower and an egg. We created a bowl out of flower and then cracked the egg and mixed it in. We then added a pinch of salt and some olive oil and that was it! You then need to knead the dough. After the dough is ready you then start putting it through the roller. We made fettuccini pasta and ravioli. For the fettuccini pasta we rolled the dough over fine wire to cut them. The ravioli was filled with ricotta cheese and spinach. Lastly for dessert we made a tiramisu. Everything was delicious and I can’t wait to go home and recreate these dishes. I'm currently in the airport waiting for our flight. I probably shouldn't have waited until the night before I left to start packing but somehow I got it done! I'm a bit nervous for our long flight, but I'm so excited to finally get to Italy! I've never been to Europe before, I'm so excited for the food and getting to know the rest of the group. My goal in Rome is to take an Italian cooking class and learn how to make pasta. I hope you follow along on my journey! |
