Welp, I'm back in Buffalo and all I can say is I want to go back to Torremaggiore! Many of us had different emotions when we returned. Some people were so relieved to be home while others like myself just wanted to go back. It wasn't like I was returning home because I didn't go back to Long Island (which is where I live). So for me, I didn't feel that relief that others felt. To finish off my blog posts, I will list a few things I'd like future IPDS Italy'ers to know!

This weekend has been magical...Saying goodbye to the children on Thursday was really hard but the places we went the next few days maybe half way made up for it. First, we took a bus to the Pompeii ruins! We had a tour guide explain the many sites we viewed on this day. This was my favorite tour of the entire trip. I usually get bored on tours but for some reason, I was able to really absorb a lot of information on this one and I feel that I learned a lot. After the Pompeii ruins we went to the city of Naples which was cool. It was very busy and city like. We were able to see the Veil of Christ which was an intricate statue of Christ covered with a thin blanket. All of it was carved out of marble but the blanket looked so realistic and I had to stop myself from touching it to see if it was real. The next day we went to the Isle of Capri. This was probably the most beautiful site I've ever seen in my entire life. I can't even explain how beautiful it was and pictures barely do it justice but here are some anyways:
Afterwards, we went to the school to say goodbye. This was such a hard parting and I will never forget my time here. I had the time of my life and really felt that this trip benefited me in ways I can't even explain. I'm forever grateful. This was a really fun experience because we had different segments. First we taught the Hello Song, then Jimmy and I taught our Thanksgiving Song, then Krissy taught Joshua, and then Angela taught This Land is Your Land. Dr. Renzoni led some rhythmic exercises with the kids which involved her clapping and stomping rhythms and the students repeating. Some students seemed more interested and engaged than others but I really feel that this is something they have never experienced before and so they were nervous and unsure of what was going on, and how to respond. I noticed that by giving encouraging nods, smiles, and thumbs ups the students seem to become more involved and want to join in. I think that we did a good job with our music class despite the fact that we had only practiced and talked about it twice. We went with the flow and made adjustments when necessary. One thing that I found really cool is that during my Thanksgiving segment is that the students were able to sing in a two part AND a three part round without and issues! I wasn’t sure if it would work but it did and it was a very rewarding feeling. These students are smart and have a lot of potential. I unrealistically wish that music was taken more seriously here and that their funding was able to cover good music programs in all their schools because these students deserve it. The students all wanted autographs at the end of the lesson and it was a very funny experience for me because they almost knocked me over! They are all very sweet and it was pretty hilarious to feel like a celebrity for a few minutes!Later on that day, myself, the Rome-ing Torremaggiores, Angela and Brittany went on a walk in the town. We saw some great scenery and even raced each other. I raced Jimmy and I won (this is a lie.) It was nice to finally get a chance to explore Torremaggiore without any plans or goals. We had a really nice time and I feel that this was a great stress reliever after teaching for 3 days. After returning, we got gelato. |
AuthorCiao! I'm a senior music education major and this is my first time out of the country! I am very excited to go on this trip and share my love of music education with others. I love being immersed in other cultures and can't wait to see what Italy has in store. On campus I am a part of Alpha Sigma Tau sorority and Kappa Delta Pi honor society in education. I am also a member of the National Association for Music Education. After graduation, I hope to further my education by getting my masters degree and to continue teaching. ArchivesCategories |
