Working with kids was definitely a fortunate. Not only did we play Basketball Vocabulary games with kids, Elizabeth M. and I incorporated Hangman in our lesson with the kids teaching them vocabulary words about holidays using our two books, Halloween and Fourth of July. We worked hand in hand due to the topic in common -- holidays. We worked side by side reading and assessing each other in our books and took turns reading our books and practicing our vocabulary to them.
I'm glad that we were able to implement educational books with these kids and still have fun. At first we struggled working with them due to language barrier but after we get past the rules of the games we play, they understand the concept of our lesson. I had fun teaching students from San Giovanni Bosco Elementary School. I am honored to be teaching at such a wonderful school with amazing students. They were so welcoming and such a blast to have. I would be honored if they end up using our lesson plans!

On Tuesday, I spent the day visiting high school students. We went from class to class doing Q&A's for 3 hours. I was surprised to see how different Italian high schools are compared to American high schools. The students were more respectful and close with the teacher; therefore, building a strong and healthy connection with each other.
However, there were some concerns that bothered me such as, cellphone usage and smoking in school. Apparently teachers can't stop and students from texting in class nor can they stop them from smoking in the bathrooms because they won't listen. After school we made plans with one of the classes we were in. They were on their fourth year of high school and was able to give us the history of their old part of town in Torremaggiore. I was so fascinated and learned so much such as the castle, an old explosion, parks, and many more. I felt like I learned so much more with the high school students than anywhere else.
Out of all the places that I've been to so far, the Colosseo was my favorite spot. The story behind it all was just so much to take in; it was really worth it. In movies and in textbooks, I've seen the outside of the building but never did I see the inside. I was so fascinated!
The games they played made me question if the movie "Hunger Games" got its game ideas from the Romans. According to the texts in the Colosseum, Since I live in NYC, I travelled more than the others. I flew from JFK airport to Buffalo. Then I met up with the rest of my group to take a limo bus to Toronto so we can fly from Toronto to Amsterdam. Then, from Amsterdam we flew to Rome. I'm unsure about the amount of hours we flew but all I know is that I am jet lagged and super tired. It definitely was a bumpy start.
After arriving to Rome, things started to look up. I took a nap, got to try some authentic pizza, and saw some monuments! Our group stayed at Hotel Orlanda which provides the option of 2-3 people in a room with their own beds! How cool is that?!?! We walked about 1-2 miles after dinner where we treated ourselves to some gelato and sightseeing places such as the coliseum! |
