Hand in Hand Partnership

Working with kids was definitely a fortunate. Not only did we play Basketball Vocabulary games with kids, Elizabeth M. and I incorporated Hangman in our lesson with the kids teaching them vocabulary words about holidays using our two books, Halloween and Fourth of July. We worked hand in hand due to the topic in common -- holidays. We worked side by side reading and assessing each other in our books and took turns reading our books and practicing our vocabulary to them.

I'm glad that we were able to implement educational books with these kids and still have fun. At first we struggled working with them due to language barrier but after we get past the rules of the games we play, they understand the concept of our lesson.

I had fun teaching students from San Giovanni Bosco Elementary School. I am honored to be teaching at such a wonderful school with amazing students. They were so welcoming and such a blast to have. I would be honored if they end up using our lesson plans!

On Tuesday, I spent the day visiting high school students. We went from class to class doing Q&A's for 3 hours. I was surprised to see how different Italian high schools are compared to American high schools. The students were more respectful and close with the teacher; therefore, building a strong and healthy connection with each other.

However, there were some concerns that bothered me such as, cellphone usage and smoking in school. Apparently teachers can't stop and students from texting in class nor can they stop them from smoking in the bathrooms because they won't listen.

After school we made plans with one of the classes we were in. They were on their fourth year of high school and was able to give us the history of their old part of town in Torremaggiore. I was so fascinated and learned so much such as the castle, an old explosion, parks, and many more. I felt like I learned so much more with the high school students than anywhere else.

Basket The Ball Around Italy

On Monday, it was out first say watching teacher candidates work inside an Italian school. The night before, Yasmine, Elizabeth and I conferenced how to help assist and assess in her bilingual Basketball book that she wrote.

As Yasmine instructed the class, I helped students by guiding them where to read. After she was done with the book, we helped assist her basketball game. The kids loved it; I loved it. It was fun!

For the basketball game, we implemented vocabulary words. There were three different levels: 1 point was to say the vocabulary word in english, 2 points was to draw a picture of the vocabulary word, and 3 points was to say a sentence from the book in English.

New Scene, New People. Never Ending Travels.

So after a hectic day of traveling to Torremaggorie, I finally got to visit their school and the town. I honestly feel like I am in love. The students were adorable and the town was beautiful. I loved how everything was such a tight community. Everyone there knew everyone, and we would get stared at because we're Americans. I would hear the kids telling their parents that there were Americani! I thought that that was the cutest thing ever.

I got toured around the school from all grades up to fifth grade. I would see so many spirited kids that were excited to see us and I would see so many kids who were shy but had a lot of questions for us. I am so excited to work with the kids here even if I don't am not fluent with Italian. I just hope my Spanish makes up for it since they're kind of similar.

Walking around town was an interesting experience. Seeing how during the afternoons shops would be closed and open back up in the events. I was surprised about how students would be dismissed at 1:30pm but have school on a Saturday. I feel like if I had the choice, I wouldn't mind 6 days a week with lesser hours. I rather be home for lunch than eat cafeteria food.

I noticed so many things that were going on around the school that I felt I could use in my teaching methods. Furthermore, I believe NYS education system should adapt some of their ways. For example, I loved how for a school that didn't have an art classroom, their artwork was beautiful and 3-D. I would of never incorporated art to be 3-D. I usually use construction paper with color pencils and paint. I also loved the way they separated their grammar. With new words they learned, it was categorized by nouns, adjectives, and verbs.

I can't wait to teach!

Out of all the places that I've been to so far, the Colosseo was my favorite spot. The story behind it all was just so much to take in; it was really worth it. In movies and in textbooks, I've seen the outside of the building but never did I see the inside. I was so fascinated!

The games they played made me question if the movie "Hunger Games" got its game ideas from the Romans. According to the texts in the Colosseum,

The Beginning

Since I live in NYC, I travelled more than the others. I flew from JFK airport to Buffalo. Then I met up with the rest of my group to take a limo bus to Toronto so we can fly from Toronto to Amsterdam. Then, from Amsterdam we flew to Rome. I'm unsure about the amount of hours we flew but all I know is that I am jet lagged and super tired. It definitely was a bumpy start.

After arriving to Rome, things started to look up. I took a nap, got to try some authentic pizza, and saw some monuments! Our group stayed at Hotel Orlanda which provides the option of 2-3 people in a room with their own beds! How cool is that?!?! We walked about 1-2 miles after dinner where we treated ourselves to some gelato and sightseeing places such as the coliseum!
